US invites Putin to G20 summit in Miami for possible Trump talks
The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami this December, potentially setting the stage for direct talks with President Donald Trump. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the UN General Assembly. Rubio stated the summit offers an opportunity for Putin to dialogue with Trump and other world leaders, expressing hope he will accept. He also noted both Russia and Ukraine have shown interest in a limited ceasefire concerning grain and energy infrastructure, though he acknowledged such an agreement would be difficult. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia values the invitation and will respond through diplomatic channels. Putin last visited the US mainland in 2015, though he met Trump in Alaska in August 2025. Lavrov rejected any pause in the four-year Ukraine conflict, accusing Europe of seeking to rearm Kyiv.
