Trump invites Putin to G20 summit in Miami

US President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December, raising the possibility of another meeting between the two leaders as Washington continues efforts to end the war in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation on Wednesday after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Rubio said the invitation offers Putin a chance to engage with the president and other world leaders. The Kremlin said it had received the invitation and would consider it through diplomatic channels. Rubio's meeting with Lavrov came as efforts to broker an end to Russia's war in Ukraine remain stalled. Rubio backed a limited ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, noting both sides had shown interest. Trump and Putin last met in person in 2025, and a G20 appearance could provide an opportunity for another meeting, though no confirmation exists that Putin will accept or that a bilateral meeting has been arranged.
