US invites Putin to December G20 summit in Miami

The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the December G20 meeting in Miami, Florida, where he could hold a summit with President Donald Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced. Rubio, speaking after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the UN General Assembly, said the US remains open to engaging with Russia on the Ukraine war despite stalled peace efforts. The Kremlin said it was "grateful" for the invitation and would decide through diplomatic channels. Putin last met Trump in Anchorage in August 2025, and has not visited the lower 48 states since before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The invitation comes as Russian strikes killed at least seven people in Ukraine on Wednesday, with President Volodymyr Zelensky warning Moscow of a painful winter response if no truce on energy attacks is reached.
