Ukraine Strikes Two Major Russian Oil Facilities, Causing Extensive Damage
Ukraine has struck two major Russian oil facilities, causing extensive damage, with fires reported at both sites. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the attacks on Telegram, and social media shows large blazes. The strikes hit an oil facility in the Samara region, about 900 kilometers from the front line, and a refinery in the Volgograd region, roughly 500 kilometers away. The Volgograd refinery, Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka, has an annual capacity of 15 million tons. Russian officials confirmed drone attacks but did not confirm fires at the oil industry. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attacks on Friday, framing them as a response to Russian escalation. The exiled Russian media Astras reports large parts of the Samara facility are burning, with claims of eight oil reservoirs on fire and over $100 million in potential losses.
