Kyiv gridlocked after Russian strikes close key bridge

larepubliquedespyrenees.fr (French) —

Massive traffic jams paralyzed much of Kyiv on Friday after Russian strikes forced the closure of a key bridge linking the Ukrainian capital's two banks. The South Bridge was shut completely following overnight attacks, with restrictions also imposed on two other major crossings. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced the South Bridge's full closure after it was hit repeatedly during the night, following a drone strike the previous day. AFP journalists reported gridlock across the three-million-person city, which relies heavily on its eight Dnieper bridges. Navigation app Waze showed enormous congestion along the river, making cross-bank travel nearly impossible. These are the first major attacks on a key Kyiv bridge since Russia's 2022 invasion. The overnight assault involved over 100 Russian drones, killing one person in a residential building. Ukraine's military said it downed most of them, while President Volodymyr Zelensky reported new Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil and military sites.
