Ukraine scales up interceptor production to counter Geran drone attacks on Kyiv

rbc.ua (Russian) —

Russia has escalated attacks on Kyiv and the region with jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones for two consecutive months, with air raid alerts now lasting longer than quiet periods. Ukraine possesses interceptors capable of shooting down these drones, but production must be scaled up. The number of jet drones in attacks nearly doubled from about 1,500 in July to over 2,700 in September, with only 55-60% shot down compared to over 90% of standard Shaheds. Ukrainian developers have produced several interceptor models, including Sting, Sting S, and Zorielit v5, but challenges include target speeds of 400-600 km/h, onboard electronic warfare, weather conditions, and a shortage of trained crews. The Ukrainian Council of Armaments says mass deployment of interceptors could occur within months, though most experts do not expect a rapid breakthrough. Key priorities include scaling production of proven models, automating targeting, and integrating interceptors with aviation and missile defense systems for a layered defense approach.
