Russia unlikely to destroy bridges with missiles, but jet drones pose a new threat
Russia is unlikely to destroy Ukrainian bridges with missiles, but jet drones could damage structural elements and force authorities to restrict their use, according to Defense Express director Serhiy Zgurets in an interview with Forbes Ukraine. Zgurets stated that cruise missiles like the Kh-101 lack the precision to hit vulnerable bridge points, and bridges were built with significant strength margins, some even designed to withstand tactical nuclear strikes. Ballistic missiles have worse accuracy, and their warheads are also insufficient against bridge durability. The expert noted that jet drones with 50-90 kg warheads and cutting elements have likely already targeted the cable-stayed section of Kyiv's South Bridge. While drones cannot destroy bridges, damage to cable supports triggers safety protocols requiring local authorities to restrict usage. Massed drone attacks on the same location could create safety risks, though Ukrainian forces successfully intercept most Kh-101 missiles.
