Trump envoys Witkoff and Kushner differ in Ukraine peace push

US President Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner employ different working approaches, with Witkoff favoring informal communication while Kushner takes a more pragmatic style, according to BBC Ukraine. An unnamed informed source told the outlet that Kushner resembles Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in temperament, constantly carrying papers, maps, and plans, whereas Witkoff prefers a restaurant-dinner discussion approach. The observation came from video footage published by Ukraine's presidential office showing Zelensky spending more time with Kushner during a brief tour of St. Sophia Cathedral, while Witkoff spent more time with military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov. On September 5, both envoys visited Moscow for talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, then arrived in Kyiv on September 6 for their first Ukraine visit to negotiate ending the war. Kushner stated in Kyiv that Trump seeks not just ending Russia's war but achieving lasting peace. The Kyiv Independent reported Trump may call Putin after receiving envoy briefings, while Institute for the Study of War analysts concluded Putin shows no willingness for meaningful compromises, with his actual demands extending far beyond seizing all of Donetsk Oblast.
