Zelensky calls Donbas key to Russia's war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the issue of Donbas is central to Russia's war against Ukraine, extending beyond the region itself. He made the remarks at a press conference in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6. Zelensky said the fight for Donbas concerns not only territories but the entire course of the war, calling it "a question of this war." He described the conflict as a "war for survival" and "attrition," with territorial control remaining a key Russian goal. He noted Ukraine has strengthened its positions in the east, where Russian forces are concentrated, and suggested Russia may increase mobilization for this direction after its elections. Earlier reports indicated Russian President Vladimir Putin still aims to capture all of Donbas by the end of 2026.
