Putin's Meeting with US Envoys Signals No Compromise on Ukraine, ISW Says

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signaled during a meeting with US President Donald Trump's special envoys his unwillingness to compromise in peace talks, insisting on achieving all military goals. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assessed the diplomatic visit as confirming Moscow's rejection of meaningful concessions. ISW analysts noted Putin reiterated demands for Ukrainian troop withdrawal from four regions, demilitarization, and "denazification," terms equating to capitulation. His stance relies on distorted battlefield information from Russian commanders, who systematically exaggerate successes, leading Putin to believe Russia can achieve its objectives without compromise. ISW calculated that at current August 2026 advance rates of 2.36 square kilometers daily in Donetsk, Russian forces would need until October 2032 to capture the remaining 19% of the region. Analysts doubt Russia can fully occupy Donbas, citing Ukrainian tactical initiative and logistical disruptions.
