Trump envoy Witkoff reports progress after Moscow and Kyiv visits

US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff reported "significant progress" following visits to Moscow and Kyiv, particularly regarding scheduling additional trilateral negotiations. His press service stated Trump is making every effort to stop the killings and achieve a lasting peace. Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and officials from the National Security Council, State Department, and Treasury met with both Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky to discuss proposals from each side. In Kyiv, national security advisors from Britain, Germany, and France joined the delegation. Zelensky reported two bilateral rounds and one multilateral round of talks, with agreements to meet again, though no date or location was announced. On September 5, the US delegation visited Moscow, where Kremlin officials reiterated Russia's unwillingness to make significant compromises, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Kushner acknowledged that ending the war before winter is not guaranteed, while discussions in Kyiv covered security guarantees, economic support, and air defense supplies ahead of the winter season.
