The premium stems from import duties and taxes on the first-generation device. The price gap narrows significantly after accounting for India's 18 percent GST and roughly 28 percent import duty, leaving an estimated underlying difference of just $100 to $200. The device is currently imported as a completely built unit rather than locally manufactured. Analysts suggest future generations could see more competitive pricing if Apple shifts production to India, though component cost pressures have also prompted price increases across the iPhone 17 lineup and some Mac models.
