Apple's $1,999 folding iPhone Duo: first impressions

Apple unveiled its first folding iPhone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, at a Sept. 9 event, with preorders opening Oct. 16 and stores receiving it Oct. 23. The device marks the first major shape change to the iPhone in nearly two decades. The Duo weighs 254 grams, heavier than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra due to a titanium frame, dual batteries, and dust/water sealing. Its matte nano-texture screen minimizes the visible crease common to foldables, and the outer display enables improved selfies and group shots. The phone's folding design allows it to function as a mini-laptop or expand video playback. No standard iPhone 18 was released this year, making the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro the cheapest new model. The Duo costs $800 more than the Pro, with first-generation Apple products historically rewarding patient buyers.
