Apple iPhone Duo hands-on: A first foldable with familiar tricks

Apple has unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, which was demonstrated at the company's Surprise and Shine event. The device enters a market already established by competitors like Samsung, Google, and Motorola. The iPhone Duo features a passport-shaped design with a metal frame, glass surfaces, and a hinge that folds 180 degrees. Apple's version includes a titanium-shielded hinge with spring mechanisms and magnets, and it offers IP68 dust and water protection, exceeding Samsung's IP48 rating. The phone has a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, both sharing the same aspect ratio. Pricing starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model, with higher storage options up to $2,599 for 1TB. Preorders begin Oct. 16, with sales starting Oct. 23. The device lacks Face ID but includes Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and its software introduces UI changes that lean toward iPadOS.
