Zelensky warns EU of mass Ukrainian exodus if Ukraine falls

nrc.nl (Dutch) —

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to European allies for support during an EU summit in Brussels, warning that if Ukraine falls, twenty million Ukrainians will flee to Europe. Zelensky's visit came after US President Donald Trump again undermined Ukraine by agreeing to purchase Russian diesel and reportedly slowing Starlink internet services used by Ukraine's military. European leaders criticized Trump's actions, with Dutch PM Rob Jetten calling the diesel deal "ridiculous" and Danish PM Mette Frederiksen saying the Western alliance is weaker. The EU remains Ukraine's main financier, having lent 90 billion euros, but Kyiv will need 70-100 billion more next year. Zelensky pushed for frozen Russian assets to be released to Ukraine, though Belgium blocked this proposal. Ukraine continues EU membership negotiations while preparing for another winter of Russian bombardment.
