Ukraine's fate hinges on US and French elections, analyst warns

aftenposten.no (Swedish) —

An analyst warns that the US midterm elections and the French presidential election could be decisive for Ukraine's fate over the next six months, with the situation potentially worsening significantly. Georg Riekeles of the European Policy Centre fears a radicalized Donald Trump if he loses. Riekeles predicts a defeated Trump would become less cooperative and tougher on Europe and Ukraine. He is also concerned about Marine Le Pen's pledge to cut French aid to Ukraine, which he says should send chills down the spines of all Europeans, as Western support has been crucial to Ukraine's resistance. The warning comes as Ukraine faces intensified Russian attacks, US threats to halt intelligence sharing and weapons sales, and issues with Elon Musk's Starshield satellite network. Riekeles believes Europe has a window until March to mobilize support, as the EU currently has no solutions ready.
