Russia targets Ukraine's power grid to cut nuclear supply, ex-regulator warns

biz.nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Russia is attempting to disconnect Ukrainian consumers from nuclear power plants by striking grid infrastructure, with even concrete protective structures potentially unable to withstand systematic attacks, according to former nuclear regulator head Hryhorii Plachkov. Plachkov said Russia targets substations that transmit electricity from nuclear plants rather than the plants themselves, warning that daily Shahed drone strikes could destroy concrete shelters built to protect transformers. He stated Russia plans to deprive Ukrainians of electricity, hot water, and water supply. Ukrainian nuclear plants continue operating, while Kyiv's power issues stem from strikes on thermal and hydro facilities. Plachkov emphasized the need for stronger air defense and mobile fire groups to protect energy distribution infrastructure.
