Starlink restrictions expose Europe's lack of satellite alternatives
The United States has restricted the operation of Starlink's military version, Starshield, for Ukrainian forces, disrupting missions and impacting air defense operations. SpaceX owner Elon Musk stated that the U.S. government controls the system's speed limits. European allies cannot offer a ready alternative to Starlink. The Eutelsat OneWeb network is considered outdated and poorly suited for frontline use, while the EU's planned IRIS² satellite constellation is years away from becoming operational. Ukrainian officials confirmed that Starshield connectivity has been restored, though speed restrictions remain. Republican Senator Tom Tillis has demanded an investigation into the disruptions, which he called an unacceptable error or negligence that endangered Ukrainian civilians and American personnel.
