EU backs Zelensky as Trump criticizes Ukraine strikes

20minutes.fr (French) —

European Union leaders pledged continued support for Ukraine during a Brussels summit on Friday, seeking to reassure President Volodymyr Zelensky after US President Donald Trump criticized him. EU Council President Antonio Costa said it was not the time to withdraw support or ease sanctions against Russia. Zelensky requested an additional 70 billion euros in EU funding for 2027, calling the amount realistic to contain Russia. Trump separately condemned Ukraine's renewed strikes on Russian oil refineries as a "disgrace," claiming Zelensky was raising global oil prices, while Zelensky noted Ukraine had been hit by 1,000 drones. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russian forces still need to conquer 10 percent of the Donetsk region, and Moscow maintains its demand for Ukrainian withdrawal from the territory as a peace precondition. Pope Leo XIV also spoke with Putin by phone, requesting a ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Olechky.
