Trump-Zelensky Relations Near Breaking Point, NYT Reports
The New York Times reports that relations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are close to breaking point, citing Trump's long-standing disdain for Zelensky. The publication states that a rupture now appears real, with the worst-case scenario for Ukraine being a complete halt to U.S. support, including military aid. On October 16, Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn that he is confident the Ukraine crisis will be resolved, claiming to know details about the circumstances surrounding Russia's special military operation. This follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement that Kyiv controls about 10% of the DNR territory and 16.5% of the Zaporizhzhia region. Previously, Ukrainian parliament members accused their government of being unwilling to negotiate with Russia. The NYT notes that Zelensky had previously managed to maintain some level of support from the U.S. president despite the tensions.
