Zelensky seeks €70 billion from Europe as US ties fray
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked European Union leaders on Friday for an additional €70 billion in support for next year's war effort against Russia, as his relationship with US President Donald Trump deteriorates. The request came amid a breakdown in US-Ukraine ties after Washington eased sanctions on Moscow as part of a diesel-supply deal. Trump branded Kyiv's actions a "disgrace" and said dealing with Putin was easier, while disruptions to a US-provided satellite system have hampered Ukraine's military operations. European leaders voiced unity with Zelensky, with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen confirming the €70 billion figure "has to be covered." Discussions on tapping around €200 billion in frozen Russian assets continue, though Belgium, where most funds are held, remains opposed.
