Zelensky asks EU for €70 billion in military aid for Ukraine in 2027
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested at least €70 billion in military aid from the European Union for 2027 to defend against Russia, stating the total cost of the war next year will reach €155 billion. Speaking at an EU summit in Brussels on Friday, October 16, Zelensky said the funds are needed for defense, weapons, and resilience, calling the amount realistic. He noted Ukraine could double or triple drone production with more money, but currently lacks the financial means to increase pressure on Russia. Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko previously outlined a $32.6 billion budget shortfall and a $45 billion defense deficit for next year. The EU summit agenda includes financial support for Ukraine for 2026-2027, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced additional funding for drones and missiles in mid-October.
