Starlink restrictions disrupt Ukraine's drone operations and communications
SpaceX has abruptly restricted Starlink satellite internet access across key Ukrainian operational zones, imposing speed caps and service disruptions that have crippled drone operations, battlefield communications, and intelligence sharing. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the restrictions will cause casualties, stating "people will die" due to failed interceptors. The throttling includes a hard speed limit of 160 km/h on active terminals, grounding hundreds of long-range strike drones and interceptor UAVs. Ukrainian forces received no prior warning, causing immediate failure of combat missions along the eastern front. Defence experts cite growing friction between Washington, Kyiv, and SpaceX over strategic targets inside Russian territory as the likely cause. Starlink has been Ukraine's primary military communication system since 2022, when Russian attacks destroyed traditional networks. Alternatives like OneWeb, geostationary satellites, and the EU's IRIS² system remain impractical or years from deployment, leaving Ukraine structurally dependent on SpaceX. Zelenskyy hopes the disruption is a technical error rather than permanent policy change.
