Russian and Ukrainian forces exchanged overnight attacks on energy infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and escalating tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump. The strikes mark the latest escalation in a series of offensives amid worsening disputes between the two leaders. Around 20 attacks hit Ukraine's northwestern Volyn region, with 370,000 consumers without electricity by Friday morning, according to acting regional military chief Roman Romaniuk. At least two people were injured in Manevychi and Lutsk. Ukrainian energy firm DTEK reported a Russian strike on its Odessa facility, while Kyiv and regions including Kharkiv, Sumy, Cherkasy, Ternopil, and Rivne also faced attacks. Separately, Russian forces said they repelled Ukrainian drone strikes on heating facilities near Vladimir, east of Moscow, shutting down two substations and disrupting heating and water supplies. A Yandex data center in Vladimir was hit and caught fire. Zelensky said Thursday Ukraine would resume attacks on Russian oil refineries after the White House agreed to import Russian diesel, and relations have also soured over a dispute about who ordered the shutdown of a Starlink military system.
