Ukraine's Starlink restrictions hamper drone operations against Russia
Ukraine has reported abrupt restrictions on its military access to Starlink satellite internet terminals in recent days, disrupting operations against Russian forces. The limits have hampered Ukrainian drones on attack and air-defense missions, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributing the issue to either the US government or SpaceX. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities, while Starshield, a military-grade encrypted service, is controlled by the US government. Former Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed some restrictions were lifted but called for removal of speed limits on Starshield, which experts say reduces effectiveness against Russian Shahed drones. This is not the first such restriction, as Musk reportedly ordered terminals switched off in September 2022, disrupting a Ukrainian operation. Experts suggest the limits may be leverage by President Donald Trump to pressure Ukraine into a deal, including an "energy ceasefire," though analysts doubt a quick agreement is feasible.
