Zelensky hits new low with Trump as US deepens Russia ties
Volodymyr Zelensky’s relationship with Donald Trump hit a new low on Friday as the US president criticised him and agreed new trading deals with Russia, prompting the Ukrainian leader to thank Europe’s “real leaders” for their support. Trump announced a diesel deal with Vladimir Putin, restricted Starlink intelligence feeds in Ukraine, and claimed it was easier to deal with the Russian president than Zelensky, who warned the agreement puts money in “Putin’s pocket” and cannot offset the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Zelensky said Putin’s peace efforts were a “parody”, while Trump considered lifting sanctions on Russia’s shadow fleet and Moscow planned new joint initiatives. Russian strikes killed three in Kharkiv, and Ukraine said it needs €70bn in European support for next year.
