Starlink in Ukraine: Why Musk's Network Is a Critical Battlefield Lifeline
SpaceX's Starlink satellite network, owned by Elon Musk, is a vital communications backbone for Ukraine's military, but a sudden speed limit imposed on connected drones has disrupted battlefield operations. The restriction, set at 100 mph, makes it nearly impossible for Ukrainian forces to intercept Russian jet-powered drones. The speed cap was imposed overnight Tuesday without prior notice to Ukrainian officials, according to senior official Serhiy Beskrestnov. The Institute for the Study of War says this renders Ukrainian interception efforts against Russian Shahed drones, which fly over 198 mph, almost futile. Starlink is widely used across Ukraine's naval, ground, and air forces. Ukrainian officials believe the restrictions are linked to tensions between Kyiv and Washington, following US President Donald Trump's criticism of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. Musk stated Starlink is commercial and restricted to civilian or defensive use, while the military version, Starshield, is controlled by the US government.
