Ukraine's Response to US Restrictions on Ballistics and Starlink
The United States restricted intelligence sharing and Starlink access for Ukraine, leaving its military to counter Russian ballistic attacks with reduced early warning capabilities, resulting in over 100 civilian deaths this week. Ukrainian officials reported that SpaceX unilaterally limited military Starshield terminals on October 14, complicating drone missions, logistics, and reconnaissance. Kyiv also received no advance warning of a ballistic strike on the capital, which U.S. officials attributed to poor weather conditions. Experts view the restrictions as pressure from President Trump to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure amid an energy ceasefire. Ukraine has since restored Starlink operations and proposed that Washington provide more Patriot missiles for defense instead of limiting its offensive capabilities.
