US Starlink restrictions in Ukraine threaten drone and air defense operations
The US is restricting Starlink services in Ukraine, imposing speed limits that have crippled Ukrainian drone operations and air defense capabilities. This has forced the cancellation of several military missions and threatens Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian attacks. SpaceX imposed a speed limit of about 160kmph on some Starlink services on October 13-14 without warning, affecting Starshield terminals mounted on drones. Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps canceled missions, and the limit is too slow for intercepting Russian drone strikes on cities and infrastructure. Elon Musk claims the US government controls Starshield and decides any speed limits, with President Trump having recently announced sanctions relief for Russia and called for Zelensky's removal. The restriction comes as Russia intensifies winter bombardments on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
