Kallas: Ukraine's refinery strikes are self-defence
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has defended Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries as legitimate self-defence, stating the attacks target the funding source for Russia's war against Ukraine. Kyiv has vowed to resume the strikes despite a US-brokered energy ceasefire. Kallas told Euronews that international law supports Ukraine's actions because oil revenues finance the war killing Ukrainian civilians daily. She noted Russia targets Ukrainian energy infrastructure to cause winter suffering, while Ukraine hits refineries to cut war funding. She urged the US to pressure Russia, not Ukraine, as the aggressor. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine halted strikes for three days at Washington's request but will resume them, accusing the US of suspending intelligence-sharing and disrupting Starlink services. Ukraine struck 12 major refineries in September, with only five of Russia's 32 major refineries escaping drone attacks by late August.
