US envoy Witkoff heads to Russia with new peace proposals
US envoy Steve Witkoff is traveling to St. Petersburg today to present new peace proposals to Russian leadership, following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies in Oslo. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed the trip, saying Witkoff will present proposals developed by American and European colleagues. A US official expressed hope the plan could pave the way for trilateral and broader multilateral negotiations, with "significant progress" reported from the Oslo talks. Witkoff and Jared Kushner have visited Russia multiple times but only went to Kyiv for the first time in September. Trump has pressured Ukraine while easing sanctions on Russia, and European leaders have called for a more central role in negotiations.
