US envoy Witkoff brings new peace proposals to Russia
US envoy Steve Witkoff is traveling to St. Petersburg today to present new peace proposals to Russian leadership, following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European allies in Oslo. The proposals were developed jointly by European and American colleagues, with a US official saying they could pave the way for trilateral and broader multilateral negotiations. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed hope the visit might prepare a meeting at the highest political level, though Russia has previously rejected such formats. Witkoff and Jared Kushner have visited Russia multiple times, but only made their first trip to Kyiv in early September. President Trump has pressured Ukraine while easing sanctions on Russia, drawing criticism that he is abandoning Kyiv.
