Putin seeks China summit with Trump and Xi to negotiate Ukraine war

spiegel.de (German) —

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly wants to negotiate an end to his war with Ukraine alongside US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, with Ukraine apparently excluded from the talks. The Kremlin proposed a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, on November 18-19, according to the Wall Street Journal. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov confirmed discussions are underway, though Trump has not yet agreed to the summit. The proposal stems from an October 9 phone call between Putin and Trump, who has since suspended key sanctions against Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that siding with Russia would be a "historic mistake" and a "great tragedy," saying Ukraine cannot survive without US support. He added that steps appear to have been taken to pressure Ukraine into capitulation.
