Russia's Rassvet satellite network threatens Ukraine and Europe with drone control
Ukraine's presidential advisor on technological innovations, Serhiy Beskrestnov, has identified Russia's satellite network "Rassvet" as the top technological threat to Ukraine and Europe, warning it could enable real-time control of drones and missiles. The satellite communication would allow Russian operators to directly control Shahed drones, reconnaissance UAVs, and low-cost missiles like "Banderol" and "Dan-M," rendering Ukraine's electronic warfare systems ineffective across the country. Beskrestnov noted Russia already has satellite coverage over Ukraine for 30-40 minutes at a time, with full coverage potentially achieved within six months. Ukraine is developing countermeasures, including sanctions, but faces challenges since Russian engineers had access to Starlink for testing counter-techniques. Aviation expert Bohdan Dolintse previously estimated Rassvet could become operational for military use within two years, with full deployment taking three to five years.
