Russia's Rassvet satellite network could enable real-time drone control over Ukraine within six months
Russia is deploying a satellite network called "Rassvet" that could enable real-time control of drones and missiles over Ukraine within approximately six months, according to Ukrainian presidential advisor Serhiy Beskrestnov. The system is described as the top technological threat from Russia to both Ukraine and Europe. The network currently provides only temporary 30-40 minute communication windows when satellites pass over Ukraine. Beskrestnov warns that full coverage would allow Russian operators to guide Shahed drones, reconnaissance UAVs, and cheap missiles directly, rendering Ukraine's nationwide electronic warfare system useless. Ukraine is developing countermeasures, including sanctions, but faces the challenge of building defenses against a system not yet fully operational. Russia's "Bureau 1440" company has shown three terminals for Rassvet, with 16 satellites launched in March and another 16 in July. Over 250 satellites are needed for continuous coverage. The company is also pursuing civilian applications, including satellite connectivity for 135 high-speed trains and a project with MegaFon combining satellite terminals with portable base stations.
