Trump's Russia Sanctions Pause Angers Both Parties, Says Graham Ally
US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend sanctions against Russia under the "Graham law" has drawn sharp criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, who called it reckless and a gift to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, wrote on X that "Lindsey would be horrified," referencing Lindsey Graham's strong support for Ukraine, and called the aid to Putin reckless and against US national security interests. Senator Thom Tillis labeled the move "extremely irresponsible," saying the administration is capitulating to a Russian dictator, while Democrat Don Beyer accused Trump of betraying Ukrainian partners and violating Congress's expressed will. Trump suspended the sanctions on October 16, citing "US national interests," after agreeing with Putin on October 9 to supply hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel fuel to American and global markets. The sanctions were part of the HR 5334 law, signed September 18, targeting Russian officials, banks, and vessels aiding energy sanctions evasion.
