Russia's Rassvet satellite network could enable real-time drone control over Ukraine within six months

nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Russia is deploying a satellite network called Rassvet that could enable real-time control of strike drones, reconnaissance UAVs, and cheap missiles. Full coverage over Ukraine may appear in about six months, according to presidential advisor on defense technologies Serhiy Beskrestnov (Flash). Beskrestnov told the Associated Press that the Russian network is the number one technological threat from Russia, not only for Ukraine but also for Europe. If fully operational, Russian operators could adjust drone and missile trajectories mid-flight, potentially undermining Ukrainian electronic warfare systems. He warned this would enable precise attacks across the entire country, calling it a catastrophe for all. Currently, satellite coverage over Ukraine is temporary, lasting only 30-40 minutes during passes. Ukraine is preparing countermeasures, including sanctions, but faces challenges since Russian engineers have tested jamming against Starlink. Russia launched 16 satellites in March and another 16 in July, with over 250 needed for round-the-clock coverage. The Rassvet system also has civilian applications, including connecting high-speed trains.
