Allies Must Push Trump to Reinstate Russian Sanctions, Zelensky Says
President Donald Trump signed an executive order pausing a sweeping sanctions package against Russia, which was due to take effect Sunday, citing the "national interest" and triggering bipartisan outrage in Congress. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope the measures could be revived, urging allies to voice support. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the order as a 60-day pause to analyze economic impacts, citing high US energy prices and the ongoing Iran war. Republican senator Thom Tillis called the move "beyond irresponsible," while Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump's "deal with the devil keeps getting dirtier." The bill, known as the Lindsey Graham Russian Sanctions Act, passed the Senate 86-11. The sanctions were designed to impose steep tariffs on countries importing large amounts of Russian oil, aiming to cut funds fueling the four-year war. Congress is on recess until after Election Day, leaving next steps uncertain. Zelensky also said Ukraine is discussing Starlink speed restrictions with US officials, which he says hinder interceptor systems against Russian drone attacks.
