Zelensky Links Massive Russian Energy Attack to Trump Sanctions Waiver
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky linked Russia's massive attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure to the Trump administration's decision to waive sanctions under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, warning that easing pressure encourages Putin. Russia launched over 320 drones and other weapons against more than 15 critical power facilities between Friday evening and Saturday morning, with Ukraine's Air Force reporting 332 drones and missiles fired and hits at 22 locations. Zelensky said the assault aims to cause a blackout before winter, while Trump's executive order waived tariffs and restrictions despite bipartisan criticism from Republicans including Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn. The sanctions dispute follows Trump's October 9 agreement with Putin for additional Russian diesel supplies to U.S. markets, which Zelensky warned could lead to broader economic openings and further sanctions relief.
