Starlink restrictions expose Ukraine's dependence on US satellite control
The Trump administration restricted Starlink satellite communications for Ukraine's military during a dispute with President Volodimir Zelenski, disrupting drone operations by imposing speed limits that cut connections. The restrictions were lifted days later, but the incident exposed Ukraine's critical dependence on the US-controlled system. On October 14, Ukrainian military command reported drones with Starlink terminals losing connections at speeds over 160 km/h, causing mission failures. The threshold dropped to 60-80 km/h the next day, severely impacting command operations, before rising again. SpaceX owner Elon Musk stated all decisions are made by President Trump and the US Department of War, though Washington denied seeking to paralyze Ukraine's military command. Starlink is deeply integrated into Ukraine's military, used for infantry communications, drone relays, and ground robot control. No direct replacement exists outside US control; Europe's Eutelsat OneWeb is still being incorporated into the IRIS² system, while Chinese alternatives may reach Russia first. Ukrainian commanders are now urged to seek alternatives, as a complete shutdown remains possible if tensions escalate.
