US threatens 'devastating' countermeasures over EU satellite frequency plan for SpaceX

nos.nl (Dutch) —

The US ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, has threatened "devastating" countermeasures against Europe if Brussels proceeds with plans to restrict market access for American companies like SpaceX. The warning was issued to the Financial Times. The European Commission proposed last summer to reserve part of the mobile satellite service frequencies exclusively for European companies, which would leave fewer frequencies for non-European firms. Brussels says the plan aims to strengthen European technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on US technology. SpaceX has previously criticized the plans, arguing they could endanger satellite support in Ukraine, where its Starlink network is used by Ukrainian forces for communication and drone control in the war against Russia.
