Ukraine Strikes St. Petersburg Region in Major Overnight Drone Attack
Ukraine launched a large-scale overnight air attack on Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, and its surrounding region, targeting energy facilities and a data center. The strike caused fires and disrupted operations at Pulkovo airport, with no fatalities reported. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed drone strikes hit an oil terminal and civilian infrastructure across four districts, prompting emergency response and potential mobile internet disruptions. In the Leningrad region, tech company VK reported its data center was attacked, though services remained available. Governor Alexander Drozdenko said 126 drones were shot down. The attack, which began at 2:50 AM local time, targeted port infrastructure, oil tankers, and the data center, according to Ukrainian monitoring channels. The oil terminal handles 12.5 million tons annually. This follows previous Ukrainian strikes on St. Petersburg in July and ongoing drone attacks near Moscow, as Ukraine continues hitting deep targets while Russia escalates strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
