Putin seeks China meeting with Trump on nuclear arms control

n-tv.de (German) —

Russia is seeking a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in China this November to discuss nuclear disarmament, with Trump expressing openness to a trilateral summit that would also address Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow has repeatedly stressed the urgent need to resume dialogue on strategic stability and nuclear arms reduction, noting that the world currently lacks a legal basis for such agreements after Russia and the US exited disarmament treaties. Trump stated he is ready for a three-way meeting at the APEC summit in Shenzhen, where Chinese leader Xi Jinping could participate as host. Putin also hopes for a new meeting with Trump's Ukraine envoy Steve Witkoff, who is expected in Russia after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo. Ukraine maintains that no negotiations about its country can occur without Kyiv's participation.
