Melania Trump claims she secured ceasefire in Ukraine's Olechky
US First Lady Melania Trump claimed Friday she secured a localized ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Olechky, occupied by Russian forces since 2022 and facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The agreement is set to take effect October 29, but neither Kyiv nor Moscow has confirmed it. Trump stated that without her intervention, delivering humanitarian aid to the frontline city near the Dnieper River would have been impossible. The White House said she worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders as an "exclusive intermediary" to define the ceasefire's terms, including objectives, technical details, and timeline. Olechky, in the southern Kherson region, was heavily affected by the 2023 Kakhovka Dam destruction, which caused major flooding. Its population has dropped from about 24,000 to roughly 2,000. Ukraine and Russia acknowledge the humanitarian crisis but blame each other for blocking food deliveries and evacuations.
