Ukraine partners with Nokia and ICEYE to build its own satellite network
Ukraine's Defense Ministry has signed a letter of intent with Nokia and ICEYE to develop a domestically controlled satellite communication system as an alternative to Starlink. The agreement, announced on October 22 during the Finnish Prime Minister's visit to Ukraine, covers studying cooperation for secure satellite communications for defense needs. The technology would allow Ukraine to independently control satellites, ground infrastructure, and communication terminals. No specific timelines or funding have been disclosed. The move follows SpaceX's October 14 restriction of its military Starlink version in Ukraine, which caused communication disruptions for drone operations. Although President Donald Trump stated on October 22 that Elon Musk lifted the Starshield speed limits, Ukrainian officials report the restrictions remain in effect.
