Melania Trump brokers ceasefire in Ukraine's Oleshky for aid and evacuations
The White House announced Friday that First Lady Melania Trump mediated a localized ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, set to take effect October 29. The agreement aims to allow humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations, though Russia and Ukraine have not confirmed it. The truce, limited to Oleshky, was brokered by Melania Trump with a representative working directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership. The city faces a severe humanitarian crisis with food and medicine shortages, no electricity, heating, or water, and mined roads. Oleshky, occupied by Russian forces since February 2022, had about 24,000 residents before the invasion. The 2023 Kakhovka dam destruction worsened conditions, and Ukraine has repeatedly sought localized ceasefires for civilian evacuations.
