Russia and Ukraine agree to temporary ceasefire in Alyoshki starting October 29

svoboda.org (Russian) —

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in the area of the Russian-held city of Alyoshki (Oleshki in Ukrainian), starting October 29, to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery and prepare for civilian evacuation, according to the White House. The agreement was reached with the involvement of US First Lady Melania Trump, who said civilian leaders from both countries will work together to assess residents' needs and provide coordinated transport for those wishing to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine. Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov announced troops would cease fire on the Kherson direction from 4 a.m. on October 27 for the operation, while Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the deal and thanked Trump for her mediation. Ukrainian estimates suggest around 6,000 civilians, including up to 200 children, remain in Alyoshki and six nearby settlements. On October 16, Pope Leo XIV urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt fighting in the area, citing grave humanitarian concerns.
