Melania Trump brokers local ceasefire in Ukraine's Oleshky for aid delivery
The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump brokered a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky, where a catastrophic humanitarian situation has developed. The agreement enables a humanitarian aid delivery and civilian evacuation operation scheduled to begin October 29. Oleshky, located on the Dnieper's left bank opposite Kherson, was flooded after the 2023 Kakhovka Dam destruction and became a frontline hotspot, leaving mostly elderly residents without medical care, food, or clean water. Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the operation includes a strict silence regime, aid delivery, and free civilian movement, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Russia's agreement. Melania Trump initiated negotiations during the 81st UN General Assembly, using a communication channel previously employed for reuniting 34 children. She coordinated technical procedures, timelines, and demining processes with both sides, stating that without her intervention, humanitarian delivery and evacuation would have been impossible.
