Finland to donate ten locomotives to Ukrainian Railways
The Finnish government will donate ten locomotives and spare parts to Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) free of charge, with the agreement signed during a business forum in Kyiv. Minister for Restoration Mykola Kalashnik announced the aid on October 22, noting it is critical as Russia has damaged or destroyed nearly 600 Ukrainian locomotives since the full-scale invasion. The donated locomotives can operate autonomously without connection to overhead power lines. This capability is vital amid Russian strikes on energy infrastructure, helping maintain passenger service, evacuations, humanitarian deliveries, and exports. Ukraine is also forming an international coalition to supply more used locomotives, following agreements made during the Carpathian Eight summit.
