Melania Trump announces ceasefire in Ukrainian city of Oleshky
US First Lady Melania Trump announced Friday she secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied city of Oleshky, set to begin October 29, though Moscow and Kyiv have not confirmed the deal. Her office stated the ceasefire aims to enable humanitarian aid delivery and evacuation of elderly residents from the front-line city, where the population has dropped from 24,000 to about 2,000 since 2022. Melania said she worked with both countries' leaderships and that civilian teams will jointly assess needs. The announcement follows her previously revealed back channel with Russian President Vladimir Putin and her office's claim of reunifying 34 children separated by the war. It comes as President Donald Trump has shifted US policy toward Russia and away from Ukraine.
